The Sydney Institute: Anti-Semitism on Campus – Then and Now

On June 3rd, Julian Leeser MP introduced a Private Members Bill for a Judicial Inquiry into Antisemitism at Australian Universities. We will need both respect and empathy in these challenging times, in which antisemitism is revealing itself in institutions that we should be able to rely on to be enlightened.

At The Sydney Institute on Tuesday night, I offered my perspective on the issue, informed by my experience on campus in the 70s.

I was a former President of the Australasian Union of Jewish Students and saw first hand the beginnings of the on-campus antisemitic sentiments which are now mainstream. My co-presenters Tim Lynch and Freya Leach offered a perspective of the situation on campus now.

I am shocked by the velocity, ferocity and ubiquity of antisemitic sentiment and action here in Australia. We must confront this reality and ensure respectful dialogue.
